THE CREATORS COVEN: GENRE FILM GENERATOR ANNOUNCES WINNERS

The Bloody Mary Film Festival (BMFF) and Creators Coven team are delighted to announce the winners of the inaugural edition of the incubator for the development of genre features by women in Canada.

Toronto-based filmmaker Roney, whose first short film, Glitters Wild Women, premiered at TIFF 2018 and played at BMFF, was selected as the winner. Roney will participate in a year-long development process with producers and Creators Coven co-founders Katarina Gligorijevic and Colin Geddes of Ultra 8 Pictures, Robert Menzies (Zed Filmworks) and Ilona Smyth (Smyth Casting).

Mariel Scammell (Where The Witch Lives) and Alyx Melone (Robot Boyfriend) have been selected as runners up and will receive $1000 in free story editing and script consulting from Ultra 8 Pictures.

“We are thrilled with the caliber of projects that were submitted to the inaugural Creators Coven” said Co-Executive Director Laura Di Girolamo, “and we can’t wait to see how these films develop.

Stay tuned for the call for submissions for the 2019 edition of Creators Coven: Genre Film Generator, in early spring.

“We have big plans for the 2019 edition of Creators Coven and can’t wait to share them,” said Katarina Gligorijevic. “We hope to bring even more – and even bigger – opportunities for female genre filmmakers in Canada this year.”

About The Bloody Mary Film Festival

In 2014, Women in View found that women directed only 17% of films supported by Telefilm Canada. A year later, the Centre for Study of Women in Film and Television in San Diego found that women account for only 11% of individuals working on horror films in the U.S. The Bloody Mary Film Festival aims to highlight the achievements of female directors across Canada working in genre films, and by fostering a community of genre filmmakers and film fans, to contribute to remedying gender inequality in the film industry.
